About Tada Mu

While living in the jungle the Karen used available materials to make improvised looms to create clothing. Since arriving in Canada and through the help of Luciano Pistrin and the Karen Initiative, comparable looms to those used in the jungle have been created, allowing Karen women to once again practice the fine art of weaving.

Weaving is a time-consuming and labour-intensive process. However, it allows the women to share an important part of their Karen culture with Canadian society and to carry on a valued tradition.

Why Purchase a Tada Mu Product?

By purchasing a woven product made by Tada Mu, you are not only acquiring a one-of-a-kind piece of art, but are directly supporting the women who are part of the cooperative. The weaving co-op consists mostly of ladies who have exceeding circumstances that make it difficult to work towards self-sufficiency in Canadian society. Many of these women are single mothers or are elderly, most are illiterate in their own language and several suffer the effects of post-traumatic stress. With this in mind, weaving allows these women to have a degree of autonomy and a sense of purpose. It allows them to contribute positively to society and their families in a small, yet meaningful and significant way.
